Genetic Control of Proteins - Exam Practice

 

In this question the examiner is testing your knowledge of the triplet code - i.e. how many DNA bases code for 1 amino acid? - You can simply work this out by multiplying 1480 by 3. This gives 4440. 

 

The follow up question to this is usually - why might the gene sequence for the CFTR gene contain more than this number of bases?  

 

Your answer would be:-

1) Presence of noncoding regions of DNA  (which would be the introns on the strand of pre-mRNA) within the gene sequence and

2) Presence of START and STOP codons.
